Normally, I stop off at the 99cent store just a block from my house to buy my early Sunday Edition of the Houston Chronicle...............which has all the coupons!!!!!!!!! Normally, this paper costs $1.75, and I buy 2 so that I can get 2 sets of coupons (and Laurie gives me her set, too.........thanks Ya Ya!). But, lucky for me, I live by the 99cent store that sells the papers for............you guessed it, 99 cents! Each! That is a savings of $1.50!

So, today, like any other Saturday, I take a trip to the 99cent store to find them packing up and CLOSING!!!!! And, they are not selling the paper today!! Or tomorrow! OR EVER AGAIN!! And there are supposed to be 6 coupon inserts in each paper this week. I am crushed. Farewell 99cent store. It was good while it lasted. Except for the time we bought Macaroni and Cheese that had bugs in it.

Hot Friday Night Date............sort of :)

So, it is Friday night. I don't normally read forwarded e-mails.............but a friend from my home church sent this to me today, and I found it quite challenging. Although a work of fiction, I found that it addresses many issues facing the modern follower of Christ. Satan is working hard to steal our souls away from our Lord. First, our goal this year has been to pay off debt. Therefore, most of our "extra" money each month is spent to achieve that goal. So where does Christmas shopping fall into this great plan??? Well, for us it has meant decide on an amount we can spend and send the rest to VISA!

Our Christmas, as far as gifts are concerned, will be humble this year..........(well, I guess that is relative to what you are accustomed to at Christmas. I realize many families struggle to feed their families and Christmas gift giving is a luxury they can't afford.)

This year's "humble Christmas" has been a lot of fun. I have been busy making several "gifts" for my friends and co-workers. Today, my team of teachers provided a soup luncheon for our principals, office staff, and other school workers. It seemed to have accomplished its intended purpose and I was thrilled that I was able to spread some holiday cheer.

Tonight, I have been baking pumpkin bread for my friends at school. We all decided to do "homemade" gifts this year.............I can't wait to see what everyone made! For my math department, I am folding origami boxes and filling them with chocolate I got on sale through the Grocery Game............don't worry, it is Hershey's chocolate!

I hope they all know how much I love and appreciate them. And.............I am finding that sometimes more love goes into something made by hands!

Happy Holidays!

Are you an Anti-Racist Parent?

Did my title catch your attention?

I have been following a blog called Anti-Racist Parent, and I wanted to share it with the hopes that you will check it out. You don't have to have a child who is a minority to be concerned with teaching your children about racism. I love this quote from Anti-Racist Parent,

"There are no quick and easy shortcuts to becoming anti-racist – not for myself, and not for my kids. For our family, becoming anti-racist is a journey, not a destination."

Please join my family on our journey to becoming anti-racist.

I know our society wants to portray and believe that racism is largely a thing of our past.........but as the mother of a now minority family, racism is alive in many subtle and major ways. I encounter it every day in some form or fashion. Not directed at me or my family (most of the time), but in comments made about others who are different either physically or socially. Another quote that caught my attention,

"So much about race and racism intersects with other types of
diversity, including class, culture, religion, gender and sexuality.
Racism doesn’t exist in a bubble and it isn’t a problem to be
“solved.” Parents need to be able to address diversity in all its forms."

I know that I personally have a lot to learn about people who are different from me. Anti-Racist Parent has challenged my thinking and opened my eyes to so many difficult realities. I pray that God will bless our society and lead us to a more "anti-racist" existence. I pray that teaching and modeling to our children how anti-racism looks, talks, and lives will develop a society that embraces diversity and eliminates injustice.

Anti-racism is OUR fight. Not just the fight of minorities. But, OUR fight. When we ALL do our part to fight racism, we will ALL win.

I don't know what prompted the comment made to me by one of my students today. We were walking down the hall on our way to PE and he said to me, "My mom is Hispanic." Inwardly I was surprised because his appearance would never lead me to conclude that his parents are not both black. I asked him, "What about your father?" He replied a little sheepishly, "Black." I said with a smile, "Cool! I did not know that about you!", and I then shared with him about my diverse family.

Our world is changing. Families are changing. I hope we are ready to change.

"27God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28God blessed them................." I opened the e-mail tonight just before leaving for my Weight Watchers meeting and thought they couldn't be more appropriate! I hope they help you as much as I know they are going to help me.

Manda

Eating Tips for the Holidays

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can and quickly. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an 'eggnog-aholic' or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it! Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think.

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand-alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, pumpkin and mincemeat - have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert -- Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips: Start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.
Remember:

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. Work has been a challenge lately....I think I bit off a little more than I can chew there: dept. chair, textbook adoption committee rep, curriculum writer, CEIC committee member, and teach all of my classes. I only signed up for one of these posts...........the rest just happened to me! Anyway, stress continued to build, so I talked (and cried a little:() to my principal and assist. principal (2 great ladies), and they took one of the jobs off of my list and it was a great relief. Really, I just want to teach my students and spend time focusing on things directly related to them...........but that is not always possible in public ed. Not to mention, my first and most important job........Ryan's wife and Jacob's mommy........I really pray that one day I will be able to stay at home and be a professional homemaker!

Also, as you know, Ryan has applied and been accepted to Harding's school of preaching. We have a major move and life change in our near future. We will be leaving our church, my bestest friend (Uh huh, Kevin!) Laura, my wonderful work friends, and hardest of all, our families. Pray for us! I am most nervous about moving Jacob to a less (in my opinion) diverse part of the country.

The last week has been a great time off from school to be with Ryan and Jacob. We spent a lot of time at HOME! We spent Thanksgiving at my mom's house and went for a short visit to Ryan's mom's house. On Friday, we took Jacob to the Sesame Street exhibit at a museum in Houston. See Ryan's blog for the details.......... and today, we went to worship, had a great bible class and sermon, went to lunch with Laura's family........I love her girls! Jacob and I went grocery shopping while Ryan worked on tonight's sermon. As I write, I am stewing a chicken for chicken-n-dumplings and homemade granola bars are baking! YUM!

One thing I'd like to share........I have been compelled lately to seek comfort when I am struggling from the Bible (wow! what a great idea!). Yes, I study the Bible, but lately, it is when I am having a hard time that I just HAVE to end my day in the WORD. Last night, I was reading in Mark (I think) about people coming to Jesus and him healing them. I always struggle reading the events in the gospels and making application to my life.........but last night I was, like, OH! I get it! Jesus heals sick people when they come to him. I am "sick" and he heals me, too, when I come to him! Don't know why I am sharing with you (whoever "you" are reading this).....I don't normally share my private thoughts with just anyone......but, I just wanted to share. Jesus is the great healer and he comforts and heals us of our struggles when we come to him and obey his word. There.....thats it.

Manda

Bloggin for money

Ryan must have gone crazy. Love ya, Stephanie!

So, the following Top 10 list is in response to her observation...........and, yes, if I'm really honest, I AM an uptight parent. But, I chalk it all up to being a FIRST time parent who is a little bit of a worrier already.........parenting just magnifies it! So, here goes........

Top 10 Reasons Why You Might be an Up-tight Parent

10. You still cut up your 2 1/2 year olds food before serving it

9. You still change his clothes on a changing table

8. You don't allow him to eat snacks during worship.......although he can bring a sippy cup to drink from

7. You don't allow him to bring toys to play with during worship

6. Your very tall for his age 2 1/2 year old still sleeps in his baby bed

5. You still let him watch Baby Einstein DVD's

4. You still sleep with a baby monitor next to your bed

3. You steal your child's Chicken Little Pez dispenser because you don't want him eating all that candy, give it to some teenager, who then gives it back to your child after they have eaten all the Pez

2. Spank, sternly reprimand, and place in time out your child's Chicken Little Pez dispenser after your toddler informs you that, "Chicken Little pushed Abbie"

1. You forbid your child from taking any toys to bed (Fred the pet fish "babysits" all special toys like the little Big Red Car, Toad, and Chicken Little each night while toddler is in bed)

Dear Lord,

Please help my child grow into a well-rounded human being despite his up-tight parents!

Who are you?

Take the 100 Acre Personality Quiz!

Take this quiz to see who you are in the One Hundred Acre Wood..........I was Winnie-the-Pooh!

Grammy's House

On Tuesday, Jacob and I went for a visit to Grammy's house. Jacob loves Grammy's house because of all the spoiling he gets. He loves to play with Nick, Allie, Maggie and Mikey (mom's 4 Maltese dogs) and he always has about 10 boxes of Animal Crackers waiting for him when we get there. My pantry, needless to say, is always well stocked with his favorite snack! Grammy had a mission for this visit. She took us to target in search of some Little People toys for Jacob to have when he is visiting. (She had already purchased a dump truck with legos for him) We were very successful, and we even found some wooden cars for him. I bought 4 to take home to Pearland, and Grammy HAD to buy the same four for Jacob to play with at her house! I call that S-P-O-I-L-E-D! So now Jacob has a basket of toys to play with at Grammy's house. Not that he needed any.......Grammy keeps him plenty entertained all by herself! We love you, Grammy! Here are some pics:

And, while Jacob rested, Grammy and I "shopped" around in her house for goodies (she has lots of cool stuff that she sells in her Ebay store). Thanks Natalie. I am going to assume she is just telling me gently (hah!) that I don't update my really cool and interesting blog as often as she would like......so here's the Manda update:

1. Hubby is out of town with teenagers from church.
2. I am doing my best to stay busy 'cause I miss him.
3. I have found a recipe for homemade laundry soap that I am going to try..........I know. I am soo cool.
4. Ryan, Jacob and I went on a mini vacation to Sea World San Antonio, but it stormed the whole time and we were stuck in the hotel.
5. My desire has always been to have a "few" children, and now more than ever, I am wanting Jacob to have a brother or sister to call his own. I know that God has blessed me more than I could ever have hoped for through Jacob, and it is with mixed emotions that I even allow myself to think about another child. First, I know that if we never add another little one to this family, it will be okay. Second, I am so intimidated by the adoption process and going through it again. We had the most amazing experience with Jacob's adoption, but I also know that the process can be very difficult. I pray that the Lord will bless us with another child and I ask for strength and wisdom for Ryan, Jacob, and I. And..........I pray for the children who need a mom, dad, and a brother. I pray for the parents of these children, that they will seek the Lord and that whatever they decide is best for their family, that it will be the Lord's will. My best friend Laura (photographer), did Daddy and Me sessions last week. Click here to see a slideshow of the sessions. I cried when I saw the 3rd or 4th dad with his family. He had 3 little children on his lap.........all very small. They were all his foster/adopted children. They were a diverse family like Ryan, Jacob, and I. When I saw them, my heart jumped and tears came to my eyes. Pray for our family. You win!" No more guilt or empty promises. "I'll fold that tomorrow night after work and after Jacob goes to bed." (Yea, RIGHT!) "If I just complete one load a day; wash, dry, fold, and put away, I can stay caught up." (WHATEVER!) After 10 years, I finally get it: Women who stay caught up on their laundry are FICTIONAL characters. Somebody invented them to make REAL women feel guilty. Well, NO MORE! A few dirty clothes on the floor or a pile of clean clothes the size of Mt. McKinley next to your bed never killed anyone. So, now that I have come to grips with reality and faced my weaknesses, I am going to go push all that clean, wrinkled laundry onto the floor, crawl into bed and read my book club book. I sat down for a couple of hours and completed our household budget for April and an allocated spending plan for each pay check. Ryan and I have been working so hard to eliminate all of our debt, and we couldn't have done it without Dave Ramsey and his website, www.mytotalmoneymakeover.com. I love not having to figure out what to do on my own......Dave has already figured it out for me. We just have to stick to the plan and get serious. And that is what we are doing! I can't wait to call Dave Ramsey's radio show and yell on the air, "WE'RE DEBT FREE!"

Real Moms.......

Wow, this post was probably the furthest from my mind 5 minutes ago, but after visiting my best friend Laura's blog and reading about her loss of an unborn child...I felt compelled to share, too. We lost our unborn baby almost 6 years ago, only a couple of weeks after finding out we were going to be parents. We were not prepared for the grief of that loss, nor were we expecting to spend several years of our early adult life battling all that goes along with realizing that you will probably never conceive. To this day, Ryan keeps a picture of us in Tortola taken during our very short pregnancy. Those were the hardest years of my life. And, they seem to have taken place a lifetime ago....For today, I am a mom. A REAL mom! Jacob's mom. I didn't know it then, but God had a better plan for us, and I am still in awe of how he brought together our little family of 3. I will never forget the first time I was alone with Jacob.......he was just hours old, and I got to rock him for the first time. And that was just the beginning! Praise God!

Bread Day.......

Well, tonight I embarked on my 3rd baking of Amish Friendship Bread. My bestest friend, Laura, gave me a baggie of starter about a month ago, and I have been squishing, baking, and sharing bread ever since. My latest apprentice, my mom, called tonight as she eagerly waited for her bread to bake in the oven........nevermind that she only made 3 baggies of new starter instead of 4, used a METAL bowl, and used cook and serve pudding mix instead of instant. Needless to say, she hasn't called back to let me know how it all turned out. And, she had big plans for this bread. Poor Don is expecting some WONDERFUL bread to eat for breakfast each morning.........Good Luck, Mom.........I still believe in you. This is all from the same woman who makes THE best fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and a whole bunch of other yummy things. All of which, she has not made for me in quite awhile! So, watch out! YOU might be the next lucky woman to receive a bag of Amish Friendship Bread.............it is more than the joy of baking fresh bread every 10 days for your family. It's the joy of listening to people freak out and gripe about having to squish and use all the ingredients in their house.

My Stockpile.......

These are pics of my Stockpile (groceries I buy at dirt cheap prices)!

75% at Randalls

Spent: $14.04
Saved: $42.72 ($21.90 in coupons from newspaper)

Biggest deal:

2 boxes Playtex Tampons for $0.29 each.......WOW!
Joy dish soap for $0.10
4 Arrid deoderants for $0.50 each

I was very excited! Well, today I went on the mother of all grocery shopping trips, second only to one other time where I saved 67%. This evening at Krogers, I saved a whopping 64%! I spent $50.65 and SAVED $87.45! $48.58 of that savings was from the Kroger card discount, but almost $39 of that was in manufacturer coupons from the Sunday papers (I get the early Sunday Edition on Saturday afternoon)! So, what did I get for only $50.65 you ask................well:

For free:

3 10 packs of gum
2 single serving SPAM
1 box Kleenex
2 4-count packages of O-Celo sponges

And, for dirt cheap:

4 6-packs water
4 12-packs diet coke
2 Pilsbury cookie dough
2 Pilsbury crescent rolls
2 Pilsbury sweet rolls
2 refried beans
6 campbells soup
shredded cheese
Disney Yogurt
Quaker oatmeal bites
2 64-oz apple juice
2 gallons milk
tampons (sorry guys)
2 4-pack of Bic Advance Razors ($0.50 each!!)
3 packages lunch meat
2 zatarans rice
2 3-pack of Ivory soap ($0.25 each!)

And a few other things. Some people are danger junkies.......not me. Standing at the checkout counter while the cashier scans my coupons makes me shake in my shoes. Go check out the grocery game at www.grocerygame.com. Tell them I sent you by giving them my e-mail address: manda_teacher_tx@msn.com

See ya!

Toddler Moments

Well, full blown toddlerhood has been quite an adventure. Jacob is talking non-stop, and we can understand most of what he says. He has started feeding himself with a spoon/fork, and has become a VERY picky eater! He is also the #1 fan of the Australian Superstars.................the WIGGLES! His favorite toys are his Wiggle Car and most recently, his Wiggle Guitar. (Ryan is the #2 fan of the Wiggles!) He LOVES to play "Wake Up Jeff!," which involves someone pretending to be asleep and Jacob yelling, "Wake up, Daddy!" or "Wake up, Mommy!," just like the Wiggles yell at Jeff. He enjoys listening to stories, and will climb into our laps with a book for us to read to him. He loves going to school (daycare), and speaks often of his best friend, Kyle Pugh. Here are some recent pics of Jacob: reading on his "cycle" and feeding himself with a spoon!

We are moving!

Well, after much urging from our downstairs neighbor (beating on his ceiling), we have found a much bigger house to rent! Apparently, our neighbor was bothered by Jacob's constant jumping, running, and driving his Wiggle car on the kitchen floor.......go figure?!? We are very pumped and can't wait to move the first of May. Now Jacob will be able to jump and run whenever he feels moved to.......which is quite often. The house is 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 car garage, a formal dining room which will serve as Jacob's play hangout, and a nice study for Ryan.....what? you are wondering what I get out of the deal??? Well, I get my very own normal sized kitchen, an indoor utility room with...........hook-ups for my FULL size washer and dryer that have been sitting in storage for the past 2 1/2 years!!! Yipee! Now we can move my Grocery Game stockpile out of Jacob's closet and into our new pantry. More on the AWESOME world of couponing later.........Yes, folks, it doesn't take much to get me excited.

My Family

I love this picture..........Jacob was almost 2 weeks old and we had only been home to Texas for 2 days. Yes, this week is the long waited for spring break. I haven't done anything special according to the world's idea of what Spring Break should be, but I have enjoyed greatly getting to be a stay-at-home mom for at least a week! Causes me to ponder my Arkansas days when I would listen to Dr. Laura on the way home from teaching in little rock. Those of you who are familiar with Dr. Laura know what I am talking about. So here is a list of the things I have done this week:

scrubbed the shower
washed all the laundry
vacuumed
cooked a yummy pot roast (Thank you Homemade Gourmet)
read a book (WOW)
and most importantly.....took care of my precious son ALL DAY LONG
oh yeah..slept until after 7:00 am for the first time since Jacob was born!!!!
